7.8knots - the slowest time ever to win a speed sailing event

Posted by whitecapsphotography on May 31, 2011 at 1:49 AM

Went to Inverloch on the weekend just gone, for ther first Inverloch Speed Invitational wekend.  Everything was in order - the wind was in the right direction, sand bar and tides cooperating. 20 odd people turned up, with Craig "Spotty" Spottiswood and former world distance champion Craig Hollins in the mix -competition was going to be tough.  Just one thing was missing 5+ knots :(

Despite this fact people bravely rigged up and the competition was hot on the water with just 3 knots separating the field, in fact 0.29 kts was the difference between first and third!!!

1st John Rohrsheim (7.80 knots 5 x 10 average, Gear: 8.5 Koncept and Starboard SUP)

2nd Dan Poynton (7.64 knots 5 x 10 average, Gear Windsurfer One Design)

3rd Craig Spottiswood (7.51 knots 5 x 10 average, Gear 8.5 Koncept and Starboard SUP)

Nearest the Pin winner

Brett Denning: Nominated speed 5.5kts, recorded speed 5.31 kts. Difference: 0.19kts.

My favourite pics of the day...

Lots to catch up on

Posted by whitecapsphotography on May 16, 2011 at 1:57 AM

Ok, so I knew I had been a bit remiss this year on blogging, I did not realise it had been 6 months!  Pretty sure that means by now no one will be reading this, but nonetheless I am here and typing so will keep going..........

It has been an interesting year...

It started with Sorrento hosting the One Design Nationals which was really fun, just love the retro colour sails, makes for some great pics.  http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=10851612

SHQ ran their annual SUP Cruise to Cerberus which attracted some big names this year and lots of media coverage - had my pics published in SupWorld!  :) Pics http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=11048362

Inverloch Windsurfing club continue to grow in numbers and fantastic events, most recently the Longboard day which was hilarious to say the least with plenty of fun challenges for the whole family.  Check out pics here  http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=11253780.

Then I was off on a road trip to Gerroa, NSW for the National Wavesailing titles which is my favourite gig of the year.  Such a fantastic chilled out surf spot and could quite happily live there.  We were not dissapointed with 5 out of 7 days sailing and I had the privelege to watch some of Australia's best men and women (and kids) rip it up.  Too many big names to mention but I will congratulate Jaegar Stone who took ot the Title in Open division.  Such an amazing sailor! Check out the action http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=11102185.  Also you can get your commerorative stubby holder with Jaegar on it for only $28.00 - contact me if your interested.

Also been spending lots of time at Sandy Point esp down at "The Dunes"  behind the inlet - one of my favs.  Also just had a session at Cat Bay, PHillip Island which was pretty good, big swell but gusty wind.  Check out gallery for local session pics http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/

Ok, promise to be more vigilant with the blogging. In the meantime dont forget you can contact me next time your heading out, happy to come wherever and take pics :) :)

Vic Wave Sailing series - Point Impossible, 16 Oct

Posted by whitecapsphotography on October 26, 2010 at 7:17 AM

"On Saturday, Round 1 of the VicWavesailng Series kicked off at Point Impossible. It was an arctic blast with a super cold west/south westerly and a nice 3 to 4 foot swell. They challenging conditions with a strong side sweep and the odd rogue monster set rolling through. Given the bitterly cold conditions for this time of year and rain deluge the night before, we got a good turn out with 8 people competing and around 20 people free sailing in total.

The day got underway with an hour long freesailing session followed by a 30 minute expression session. The four top sailors from the expression session then proceeded to battle it out in a 15 minute final which was judged on the best 3 waves and 1 jump. Evan, James, Alastair, Hudson and Hoc (who retired with a migraine) fought it out in a very impressive final which saw James winning with two massive pushloops (and he only needed to do one!) and solid long waverides down to the river mouth " - thanks duncan for the content :)

Sandy Point Speed photos

Posted by whitecapsphotography on October 25, 2010 at 7:08 AM

Ok, ridiculously late in posting photos but finally here is a small, random selection of the fortnight, more on website and stacks more on the DVD.

Had a terrific time catching up with friends, gasbagging, meeting new people (esp the infamous snides and bender), gasbagging, shooting a shotgun for the first time (missing target), windsurfing (officially for the first time) and successfully buying real estate (for those who were privy to my stressful adventure), toning up (buns of steel, people) and of course photographing the ever changing and majical place of Sandy Point.

DVDs will be in the mail next week :)

Its been over a month since I last blogged and for that I apologise, have been super busy and didn't have a huge amount to say :0 shocking , I know!

But I will say I am heading off to Sandy Point for speed fortnight on Saturday and very much looking forward to it.  With a few friends from NSW getting in a top session last weekend am hoping the wind will come back and play.  Stay tuned for regular update.  Also go to Jodi Stevenson Photography on Facebook for regular snippetts.

Jason Polokow in Melbourne

Posted by whitecapsphotography on August 6, 2010 at 10:29 PM

Last Fri night was the premiere of the Windsurfing movie II, Joel Ryan and RPS arranged for Jason to come out to Melb and introduce the movie.  He did a quick chat about fins at SHQ and then onto the movie in Brighton.  I had the chance to interview Jason which was really interesting hearing about what he thinks about Victoria as a windsurfing destination, moving from moto-cross champion to windsurfing, and also surfing Jaws and how he survived a 3 wave hold down and nearly dying etc etc.  Will post interview when I get a chance in the meantime check out some pics - http://www.whitecapsphotography.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=9692597
