Not much of a gap between events this year as 2012 Nationals were held late in the year last year. We are back to Gerroa next week and I highly recommend it - it a great spot with 2 possible locations for event and plenty of surf beaches too.
Also check out the new Aus Nationals website - great effort put into this site esp under Hall of Fame.

Well the B2B event didn't dissapoint this year! Fantastic turnout (48 competitiors) and great conditions. We had the standard bit of controversy - this time the start, an new race record and 10 people in under 20 mins! I asked new friend Luigi Romano (PWA Slalom) who is in Melbourne for the Summer to go and he gave reigning champion Ian Fox a run for his money beating him to the marker but Ian held onto to his winning streak (10 years in a row) and took it out again in record time.

Luigi also managed to get a story and pics published in Funboard, an Italian mag!

Well stoked to see Wave Nats wrap up and pics are on Boardseeker http://www.boardseekermag.com/features/windsurfing-events/australia-wave-sailing-nationals.html
Check it out as there are also interviews with Olympian Jessica Crisp and the Open Pro winner Stuey Martin, here is a sneak peak....
Here is an snippett from Jess's interview:
Breaking your fibula and tibia (doing a forward loop at the indoor event in Paris in the 90's) - does that still affect your wave sailing today ?
I still have no feeling in my right leg around my ankle – but it doesn’t hurt when I land jumps anymore.
Congratulations on winning the Womens division. Did you have a competition strategy? If so, how does it differ to your Olympic competitive strategy?
Thankyou! My wave strategy is to get the biggest waves and do as much on each wave as possible. Then once you have your 3 waves in and you still have time try and do something big on the next wave. It is all about getting the jumps and waves in. Wave sailing I am not concerened about what anyone else is doing I am just trying to do the best I can do. Olympic sailing is totally different as it is all about everyone else so it is a numbers game.
Here is an snippett from Stuey's interview:
You haven't been windsurfing for about a decade, what have you been doing?
I have been kite surfing. (!!!) I was windsurfing professionally, based in Hawaii, but gave it away to pursue surf board shaping and start a business (Stuey Martin surfboards) back at home (Newcastle, NSW). I gave it away for 12-13 years.
You did a one handed stalled forward? How did you pull it off?
To be honest it was weird. I saw the ramp and basically this is what I would have done in that situation in previous comps so yeah, I just went for it. Things slowly come back to you on the water.

Had an amazing time in Woolgoolga, NSW for the Australian Wavesailing titles. Have driven about 3,500kms, but it was worth it. Great location, terrific people, sailable conditions (can sail in any wind but Westerly), breaching whales, local pig races and lots of parties

Wow - I cant believe I haven't been out in 4 months, well, it has been a pretty ordinary winter this year, not very inspiring photography wise - grey flat skies and dark water. So it was a N 25+ forecast for Sunday just gone, the sun was shining so I managed to get to Green Point to see who was out, it was pretty windy, gone was the sun, prob 6-8 sailors out and 2 kiters. Felt pretty rusty and my camera hand was a bit sore, lol, but is was good to get into the swing of things.

Results and recap from WVS crew "The second round of the 11/12 VWS series was held at Point Impossible on Sunday 16/10.
A great turn out of wavesailors were greeted with Westerly winds around 20-25knots with some fun sized 2ft waves which made for some great wave riding and jumping.
The sun was out and the wind was up early which saw over 30 guys on the water having a free-sail before the expression sessions got under way.
I know we keep saying this, but the level of sailing as increased so much recently! It's great to see for the sport in Victoria.
Intermediates got out on the water first and we saw some great waveriding from the local 'Glenns' with CORE Boardsports riders Glenn Kewish & Glenn Daniels both getting their fair share of waves. Some great wave riding from Tom Champion, David Spragie & Damien Callaman while late starter Alex Knott made the most of the conditions. Brother's Ben & Andy Donegan got amongst it, Andy with a great jump and Ben scoring the wave of the heat, which gave him enough points to advance through to the final and take the heat win.
The opens hit the water, split into two expression sessions. Some awesome wave riding from RPS's Andy Ackland throwing heaps of spray with some powerful top turns.
Tao Langham (the ZU) landed some of the cleanest backloops of the day to make sure he advanced through to the finals.
Dan Gardner, more well known as 'the guy with the cow head on his sail' shredded in the expression session to get through to the finals. While the wind was up Dan was throwing some huge forward loops, and some solid Goiter attempts.
Jono Boullier popping forward loops everywhere while some great waves and taka attempts from CORE board sport's Bryce Miller were great to watch.
The ZU board sports young gun Zac Douglas looked at home on his new Severne kit and scored plenty of waves, but not enough to get through to the finals against some tough competition.
Local shredder Tom White (the ZU) managed to find all the best waves of the heats and got some long rides with heaps of powerful turns to secure his place in the finals. RPS, Fanatic & North sailors James Toth & Joel Ryan scored some solid wave rides and landed some good forward & back loops to get through to the finals while SHQ'S JP/NP rider Al Mcleod sailed his way into the final spot in the final heats.
In the Intermediate final Glenn Kewish showed the way making the most of the waves and getting the longest rides of the heat to take the overall win, a late wave from Andy Donegan put him up into 2nd place, in only his second season windsurfing! Glenn Daniels just didn't quite get enough waves to knock Kewish off and finished in Third while Ben Donegan finished fourth after being taken out on the biggest wave of the heat, which could have been a high point scorer for him!
In the finals the wind went more offshore and got quite gusty which made it tough getting off the beach, but really nice and clean on the wave. In the final Tom White was super consistent and took the win from Joel Ryan second, James Toth third & Tao Langham fourth." WVS Crew

Ok, so here are results and recap from the WVS crew....
Round 1 - "Round one of the Victorian Wave series got off to a flying start at Right Point, Cat bay on Sat 10/09/11
The first round called on for the 2011/12 season, only one week into the season was a great success with SW wind ranging from 15-25 knots and head high swell and a good turn out of around 20 competitors all keen to get out in the waves.
An early start to beat the low tide proved a good call with the swell being the best early on. 9am and sailors were already on the water with 20 knots and some nice sets coming through.
After briefing the Open class sailors hit the water in the first expression session. Some great waves early on secured Andrew 'Hock' Hocking's place in the semi final, Alastair McLeod landed some nice aerials which put him into the final 5, Phil Vaudrey landed some great forward loops and milked some waves right around the corner to make it through to the next round, as did Joel Ryan, while James Toth just piped Scotty Gibbins for the final place in the semi final.
Some solid wave rides from Zac Douglas in the heat, but just not enough to get him the points he needed to advance to the next round, while Dan Gardner struggled a bit being underpowered he did make the most out of the waves he scored. Special mention to Jon Bouillir who was very unlucky to not make the finals, Jon rode some nice waves early in the heat and in the warm up, but half way through the first expression session Jon helped tow in a free sailor who had broken a mast. Bad luck Jon, but some good Karma coming your way for sure!
Next out was the intermediate division. The sun came out and the wind filled in for the intermediate expression session. Darren Ross had the place sorted out, picking off a few of the set waves early on in the heat but just didn't get the long rides like eventual winner Tom Rossoman did. Tom managed to take the honors in the Intermediate class over Darren in second and the 'new guy' Andy Donegan took out third place with one of the waves of the heat, and a nice jump. Pretty impressive for someone who only started windsurfing last summer! Fourth place went to Sam Gordan who just didn't seem to get lucky with his waves, with Ben Donegan rounding out the field.
Semi finalists went out just as the wind started to swing slightly cross onshore which made wave riding tougher but allowed for some nice forward loops from Hock, Phil and Joel. With the top three going through to the final for the day it was Joel, Al & Hock who went through with Phil finishing the day in fourth and James finishing fifth.
As the final started the wind got lighter and the swell lost its clean form it had in the morning as the tide started getting dropping. Hock managed to milk lots of turns out of a few waves, while Al went for a few big smacks and aerials. Jumps were hard in the gusty wind but Joel managed a nice forward but struggled to find the good waves. A very close decision for the judges ending with Al taking the win by just one point, from Hock who beat Joel by half a point for second place.
It's great to get a result so early in the season, and good to see a lot of enthusiasm from people to get out in the waves! " WVS Crew

Catch up time
Victorian wavesailing titles. So far 2 rounds have been held - 1 at Cat Bay, Phillip Island and 2nd at Pt Impossible, Torquay. Check the next blog entry for results and pics.
2011 Sandy Point speed fortnight was the first in 4 years where the wind gods did dissapoint, only a couple of days action which I unfortunately missed. Those who are keen for some Sandy Point action, whether wave or flat water - the SHQ Cup weekend is coming up. On at the same time is the Sandy Point wind festival which will bring a whole lot of activities and fun. Round 3 of the Vic Wavesailing titles will be on too (weather permitting :))
I took a month off and headed to Vietnam, amazing place and really cheap. Discovered a new windsurf\kite\sup school in mid Vietnam in a place called Hoi An. Bit unpredictable with wind but if you are tying it into a holiday - great! At least bigger beach than Mui Ne. Check out their website http://www.vietnam-kiteboarding.com. For pics taken in Vietnam go to my Facebook page Jodi Stevenson Photography.
